The Internet and Poker
It wasn't that long ago that poker seemed to be reserved for specialized
gamblers in back rooms away from the public eye. Things have changed
over the last decade or so as the internet has made poker available to
people around the world in the comfort of their own homes.
An American player can find a poker table online where he might compete
against players from Australia, China, Russia, Brazil, or anywhere. The
popularity of the game exploded almost overnight. Now the game never
sleeps with players participating around the world in internet poker
rooms.
The game has officially crossed over into mainstream consciousness. The
World Series of Poker is a televised event whose participants can become
overnight celebrities. These events are often populated by more than
just the regular professional gamblers these days.
Many poker rooms offer special tournaments where the winner receives a
spot in The World Series of Poker. Online players who have earned a
seat this way have already proven their worth by winning the whole
event. Clearly the poker landscape has changed forever.
The image of the outlaw at the saloon has been replaced by the
accountant at his home computer in his underwear. Millions of dollars
change hands in these games over the internet and the online poker rooms
are bursting with profit and customers. This global success is
attracting the attention of both supporters and detractors.
The internet has long been a place of questionable jurisdiction for
authorities and that suits the gambling universe perfectly. Internet
card rooms based in places where gambling is legalized have, for the
most part, been able to cater to areas of the world that don't have the
same freedom. Governments desperately want to get involved if for no
other reason than to get their hands on some of the profits.
The battle is already in progress over governing these actions, but the
war will likely continue for quite a while. The internet universe is
still somewhat new and the tangible world is still having pains over the
process of merging with the abstract world that the internet functions
in.
Gambling in general has been a hot point of controversy for hundreds of
years and those issues likely won't be sorted in the immediate future.
Until everything shakes out, poker will continue to thrive and the more
it seeps over into the mainstream spotlight, the more likely it will
remain accepted and available for everyone to enjoy.
